Scandalous Vatican Cardinal Gives Ultimatum to SSPX to Cease from Consecrating Bishops

Vatican doctrinal chief Cardinal Victor Fernandez known the world over for his heresy and his sexually explicit writings has given an ultimatum to the Society of St. Pius X [SSPX] that if they go ahead with plans to consecrate new bishops on July 1, 2026, they will be sent into formal schism through excommunication with the full endorsement of Pope Leo XIV.

Fernandez issued the warning during a Feb. 12 meeting with the superior general of the Society of St. Pius X, the Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the Vatican said. Fernandez is open to dialogue with the SSPX but only on the condition that the Society renounces its plans to consecrate the bishops. Fernandez’ dialogue would seek to win the SSPX over to modernism, which the Society must and will never consent to.

The late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the SSPX in 1970 for the purpose of preserving and promoting the Traditional Latin Mass worldwide and now his foes are threatening to use the unauthorized consecration of bishops as a lever to destroy the work of the Society. They continually harp on Canon Law 1013 of the 1983 code, which states:

“No bishop is permitted to consecrate anyone a bishop unless it is first evident that there is a pontifical mandate.”

However, Canon 1013 also states that a “state of necessity” due to an ecclesial crisis such as we have seen since Vatican II justifies the breaking of Canon 1013. If the consecrating bishop truly believes that the consecrations are needed for the good of the Church, even though his judgment may be impaired by fear or impulse, the consecration does not incur excommunication.

If this rule applied in the past how much more would it apply today when the Catholic Church has been all but devastated with spiritual corruption.

On June 30, 1988, Archbishop Lefebvre was joined by two legitimate bishops in consecrating four bishops, they being Fathers Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson, Alfonso de Galaretta, and Bernard Fellay. If the consecration had been done with obstinance and disdain for Church law it would have incurred ipso facto excommunication on those involved.

However, Archbishop Lefebvre truly meant well in consecrating the four bishops without papal consent, for which reason the consecration did not incur ipso facto excommunication as modernists claim.

Archbishop Lefebvre Was Never Excommunicated

Many falsely believe that the Vatican took juridical action to excommunicate Lefebvre in July 1988, but this isn’t true. The Vatican simply announced what they believed (or wished to believe) was already the case, namely, that the consecration had incurred automatic excommunication on Lefebvre.  But as demonstrated above via canon law, this never happened.

Many also believe, falsely, that Pope John Paul II initiated the move to ‘excommunicate’ Lefebvre when in fact it was a mob of heretics and leftist bishops who pushed Pope John Paul into this.

The Real Reason

The consecration of bishops wasn't even the reason the bishops tried to excommunicate Lefebvre. This was only a loophole that they used to hang him with. Their real reason was that Archbishop Lefebvre was against Vatican II and its modernizing "reforms." This indeed showed true pastoral care on his part, i.e. morals, intelligence, and good judgment. Lefebvre’s judgment was right before God who himself has repudiated Vatican II through private revelation and through Cardinal Ratzinger who in 1990 told Fr. Ingo Dollinger, a close friend and assistant of St. Padre Pio, that the Third Secret of Fatima spoke of "a bad council and bad Mass" to come.

Common sense will tell us that people who reject Vatican II modernism are God's friends, which means that they do not bring excommunication upon themselves no more than their keeping the Ten Commandments does.

Benedict XVI Endorsed the SSPX

For those who would question the legitimacy of the SSPX, let us not forget that Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication of four SSPX bishops in 2009 and was ready to fully incorporate the SSPX into the Church, but then the Swedish television network SVT insidiously arranged a television interview with Bishop Richard Williamson, one of the four SSPX bishops, knowing very well that he would vent his erroneous idea that only 200,000 Jews were killed in the Holocaust so that Rome could label his superior [Benedict XVI] as a antisemitic pope. This is what killed the project to fully regularize the SSPX, however, the SSPX is still legitimate, so said Benedict.

The Big Worry

The big worry right now is that if the SSPX does another round of consecrations there is every chance that Pope Leo and radical-left Fernandez will excommunicate the Society. And whereas the excommunication would not be valid, such action would chase many of their people away. There are many good "Novus" Catholics coming into the Society at this time and they would flee the SSPX if an excommunication against th the Society was announced.

The Society could be playing Russian roulette. Prudence should be exercised. The priestly members of the SSPX are always bound to never compromise their faith, but is postponing and rethinking the planned consecration of bishops a form of compromise? Is God really requiring the SSPX to consecrate new bishops?

The SSPX should at least consider putting the consecration of bishops on hold lest the Society enter upon an unprecedented ecclesial nightmare that could injure their good work to promote the Traditional Latin Mass. Perhaps they should call a fast and do many novenas and Rosaries with the belief that God will come through with help. Above all, they should often include in their prayers “God’s will be done.
