Why the term ‘islam’ is not a proper name for Catholics to use

SEMPER EXCELSIUS - The Arabic term ‘islam’ comes from the term “aslama”, which means “to resign oneself” or “to surrender”. The word is usually translated as “submission”; submission of desires to the will of Allah. The word islam has become the name of the religion which was brought by Muhammad and implies a submission to his erroneous teachings.

For those who do not believe in submission to Allah and the false teachings of Muhammad, it is clear that another name should be chosen. For this exact reason, G.K. Chesterton always referred to muslims as Mohammedans and refused to use the word ‘islam’.

Many religions on earth are called by various names, either the name of a specific man or a specific nation. So Christianity takes its name from Christ, buddhism takes its name from its founder, the Buddha, etc. It is therefore most fitting for us to refer to the followers of Muhammad as mohammedans, rather than muslims.
